Ambrose’s works and works in progress

Update has stalled since I began working on my thesis. As a result this list is currently seriously out of date. Updates are being done so that at least the thesis-related parts of this list are accurate, although even this is lower priority than the other thesis-related tasks.

This list, as it stands, should be fairly correct though not exhaustive, since I have only started dating my work since September 2013 during my second semester in my thesis year. Dated work are usually marked with a date code on the bottom, though sometimes I forget to mark it or it is too difficult (for example on spoons or tiny sculptures) and other times the date code disappears after bisque firing or glazing.

These pieces are still basically for practice and learning, except for those thrown on November 21, 2013, although even those had a learning component (calipers).

2015/03/07, 2015/03/08 Jet Black (underglaze), Burlington Clear, Tea Dust, Doom and Gloom Grey, Rococo Baby Fired Re-created for GradEx. The cast was dried naturally for 20 minutes and no dots were detached. I was concerned that there might have been a minor glaze contamination on the bottom. But what turned out to be the real problem was that I didn’t wipe off enough glaze at the bottom, and the glaze melted onto the shelf. Rococo Baby also turned out to not work too well as a secondary colour. Also, some of this opaque glaze melted onto the writing and completely covered one of the words.

2014/12/04 Chili Chocolate, Doom and Gloom Grey (new), Tea Dust Fired Reglazing and refiring This is a study I did on tiles with the aim to eventually re-create the “broken maple leaf” that was lost in February.

Leaves bisqued in a saggar seems to be more fragile than those bisqued uncovered; the next study I do will probably involve designing a more complex saggar where I can place the tile inside the saggar and fire the tile together with the leaves in one firing so I won’t have to disturb the leaves afterwards.

2014/12/02 Jet Black (underglaze), Burlington Clear, Tea Dust Finished This is my first glazed piece this semester using red clay with Burlington Clear. The clear unfortunately was applied too thick and so cloudiness happened (and as a result the red isn’t as red as I hoped). I am also ambivalent about the rim with Tea Dust.

2014/03/13 2014/04/02 Celadon Given away This is a practice piece was planned to be and was contributed to Empty Bowls. Clay used was a random mix plus some additional CCSS. The foot was damaged while trimming and the current foot was handbuilt from a slab made from the trimmings, reattached, then re-trimmed on the wheel. Tiny cracks appeared on the rim but the cracks disappeared after bisque.

2014/03/12 2014/04/02 Celadon Fired This is a practice piece that was originally planned to be contributed to the 11 bowls for Empty Bowls. Clay used was (iirc) 5 parts Bright White plus 2 parts CCSS. The form is less than ideal due to centring problems.
Bowl 8 of 11. Mid-fire porcelaneous and speckled clay and clear glaze. Marbled and wheel thrown.
2014/03/12 Burlington Clear Given away This is a practice piece was originally planned to be contributed to the 11 bowls for Empty Bowls. Clay used was (iirc) 5 parts Bright White plus 2 parts CCSS. 2014/03/12 2014/04/02 Shino (MDR) (inside), Celadon (outside) Fired This is a practice piece was originally planned to be contributed to the 11 bowls for Empty Bowls. Clay used was a mix of Bright White and Mid White (in unknown proportions). The base was cracked on the inside (S-crack) and the glaze didn’t melt properly near that spot. So the piece isn’t really usable.
Bowl 5 of 11 ( 4¾″, 300 mL). Mid-fire mixed porcelaneous and white clay and glazes. Wheel thrown and reduction fired to cone 6.
2014/03/12 2014/04/02 Celadon (outside), Aqua Cel (inside) Fired This is a practice piece was originally planned to be contributed to the 11 bowls for Empty Bowls. Clay used was a mix of Bright White and Mid White (in unknown proportions). It fired well except that it got stuck to someone else’s work and the inside bottom has a strange glazing failure.
Bowl 4 of 11. Mid-fire mixed porcelaneous and white clay and clear glaze. Wheel thrown.

Plate ( 6¾″). Mid-fire porcelaneous and white clay and clear glaze. Marbled, wheel thrown and fired to cone 6.
2014/02/28, 2014/03/03 Burlington Clear Finished This was one of my “white on white” experiments using about 50% Mid White and 50% Bright White. The finished piece is smaller than intended because of centring problems and slightly deformed because I had forgotten how to work with Bright White.
Bowl ( 6¾″, 350 mL).
The finished piece is wobbled both because of centring problems and because I had forgotten how to work with Bright White.
Saggar. Mid-fire speckled clay. Wheel thrown.
2014/02/28 Bisqued 2014 02 19 A needs a saggar but the studio doesn’t have a big enough one so I am throwing a saggar so that that piece can be re-bisqued.
Mug with slab-built handle, strainer and lid ( 2¾″, 180 mL without strainer / 135 mL with strainer). Mid-fire speckled clay and glazes. Wheel thrown and fired to cone 6.
2014/02/26, 2014/02/27 2014/03/04 Burlington Clear (inside), Doom and Gloom Grey (outside bottom), Spearmint (outside top), Blue Me Away (strainer top) Finished The mug was knocked off the wheel a few times during trimming, and the lid was dropped on the table accidentally when I tried to attach the handle. Bending the handle caused many small cracks and we will need to see how the handle holds up after firing.

2014/02/25 Doom and Gloom Grey, Tea Dust Finished I took some clay and found that it had become too hard even for handbuilding, so I started carving it instead.
Spoon (5½", 4 mL). Mid-fire white clay and glazes. Reduction fired to cone 6.
2014/01/31 2014/02/10 Shino (bottom), Burlington Clear (top) Finished This is the sixth in a series of experiments in making a spoon from a simple press mold made from unfired clay. The hole in the handle had been made bigger so that a thicker wire could be used, but the wire still sagged in the kiln. It also got stuck on the wire after firing, though Fernando managed to separate the two.
Mishima snail ceramic shot glass ( 2″, 30 mL). Mid-fire white clay, slip and glazes. Wheel thrown and reduction fired to cone 6.
2014/02/11 Hara green (?) slip, Dark Tem (inside), Bird Nest Blue (outside) Sold This piece was made from trimmings, and I just wedged it on the wheel, so I was mildly surprised after the bisque firing that this piece actually seemed to be structurally sound. Also, I originally planned to practice some mishima (inlaying) with this piece but as you can see from the pictures, I thought the inlaying did not work out, so I just glazed the patterns over. After the final firing I was surprised to see that the patterns I thought I had scraped off are actually intact.
Small jar/vase shaped thing. Mid-fire white clay, slips and clear glaze. Wheel thrown and fired to cone 6.
2014/01/22 2014/02/10 Hara green slip, Hara blue slip, Hara yellow slip, Black terra sig slip, Hara black slip, Burlington Clear Finished This was an experiment to make a jar form. The wedging was not too well done; it is also probably too small to actually be functional.
Small sgrafitto Lorem ipsum and snail cup ( , 150 mL). Mid-fire white clay, slip and clear glaze. Wheel thrown and fired to cone 6.
2014/01/22 2014/02/10 Hara green slip, Burlington Clear Finished This is the first piece I have made employing the sgrafitto technique. Besides a couple of typos, the outside of the fired piece also has a few glazing defects: a few unglazed spots near the bottom, a few crazes, and the two milky stripes resulting from the double dipping.
Tea cup ( 3½″, 120 mL). Mid-fire white clay and glazes. Wheel thrown and reduction fired to cone 6.

I thought the inlaying did not work out so I glazed it over. But after firing it turned out that the inlaying actually did work out.
Large plate ( 8¼″). Mid-fire porcelaneous, white, brown and speckled clay and clear glaze. Marbled and wheel thrown.
2014/01/14 2014/01/26 Burlington Clear Finished This was the first large plate that I succeeded in throwing. The base, however, was made too thin for a foot.
Lid for Lorem ipsum double shot glass (2014 01 09 D) ( 2¾″). Mid-fire white clay and glaze. Wheel thrown.
2014/01/14 2014/01/27 Doom and Gloom Grey Sold The lid was designed to fit the double shot glass, but was made too wide. It still works, but the shot glass and the overly wide lid do not visually fit too well together.
Small snail sculpture (2½″ × 3¼″ × ⅞″). Mid-fire white, brown and speckled clay, slip, glazes and steel wire. Wheel thrown and sculpted.
2014/01/14 2014/02/25 Hara black slip, Doom and Gloom Grey, Crazed Yolk (top), Celadon, Tea Dust (bottom) Fired Repair feelers The base of this piece was accidentally broken a number of times, each time a new base had to be made. Unlike the first iterations of the base, the current base was carved out of a solid piece of leather-hard clay.

One of the experiments was to attach two pieces of metal wires before firing. This did not give a satisfactory result: The wires became brittle and just fell off.

Lorem ipsum ceramic double shot glass ( 2½″, 60 mL). Mid-fire white clay, underglaze and glazes. Wheel thrown.

Spoon. Mid-fire white clay and glazes. Fired to cone 6.
2013/12/04 Spearmint, Burlington Clear Finished This was basically a test piece to see how spoons are made. This one was fired hanging on a wire wedged between two fire bricks. The wire was not strong enough to hold the spoon away from the plank, and a large amount of kiln wash got stuck to the spoon. Grinding failed to remove the kiln wash, so the spoon is not really usable.

2013/12/04 Doom and Gloom Grey Finished This was basically a test piece to see how spoons are made. This one was fired hanging on a wire wedged between two fire bricks. The wire was not strong enough to hold the spoon away from the plank, but only a minimal amount of kiln wash got stuck to the spoon so the spoon is still usable. The glaze was partially double layered but this was not apparent after the firing.

Hara black slip, Doom and Gloom Grey (inside), Burlington Clear (outside) Fired Almost trimmed through the base. Repair was attempted with slip so the base might not be structurally sound, and a non-clear glaze was used becuase some of the black slip chipped off near the repair site. The foot ended up misshapened and the date code is almost unreadable.
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog mug #2 with pulled handle. Low-fire mixed red and white clay, underglazes and clear glaze. Wheel thrown.
2013/12/05, 2014/01/05 Jet black (underglaze), Terra cotta (underglaze), Pearl grey (underglaze), Mint green (?) (underglaze), Duncan Envision IN1001 Clear Fired As much as I like both my drawing and lettering on this piece, it’s got a number of annoying defects. First of all there are patches of grey colour on the inside, possibly sandpaper sand. It was trimmed on a chuck which left very unsightly marks; I tried to sand the marks away but instead of removing the marks some sand obviously got logged inside the grooves and caused the colouration. The terracotta underglaze also burnt away and no trace of the reddish brown is left.
